To make the most of STAR UNITS you need take a look at the STAR UNITS which are available linked to the S/NVQs relevant to your business. (see Which NVQs currently have associated Star Units?). This will give you an understanding of how specifically Star Units can benefit you.

Then, if you are training apprentices, you can:
  • discuss the content of the Star Units with your apprentices
  • encourage them to achieve Star Units and give support to enable them to gain the right supporting evidence
  • think about how this might link to future career development
  • consider whether you should enter successful Star Unit candidates into Skills Competitions
Then, when you are recruiting, you should ask applicants whether they have achieved Star Units (remember, only the very best will have gained them) and, perhaps, fast-track to the shortlist those who have.

NOTE: If there are no Star Units available with the S/NVQs in your sector then you should approach your Sector Skills Council and suggest that it should start developing them. Similarly, if Star Units are available but not assessed at your local college/ training provider then maybe you should find one which does – or encourage your local provider to start using them.
